Dyspraxia Awareness Week 2020

This past week (4th – 10th) October has been Dyspraxia Awareness Week! For this year’s awareness week, each day I’ve been sharing an image with a fact/some information about dyspraxia on my social media accounts. I thought I’d also share them on my blog.

Day 1 of Dyspraxia Awareness Week

Did you know the origin of the word ‘dyspraxia’? It comes from the Greek word ’dus’/Latin word ‘dys’ for ‘difficult’ and the Greek word ‘praxis’ for ‘action’. It is these physical difficulties on which a diagnosis is mostly based on but in reality dyspraxia affects so much more!

Day 2 of Dyspraxia Awareness Week

Dyspraxia is a hidden disability. You can’t tell someone has dyspraxia just by looking at them. However, you may notice certain traits when someone is carrying out particular tasks.

Day 3 of Dyspraxia Awareness Week

Despite the fact that it isn’t very well known, dyspraxia is more common than you might think! It is estimated that around 5% of the population are dyspraxic, that’s 1 in 20 people.

Day 4 of Dyspraxia Awareness Week

Dyspraxia affects the way signals are sent from the brain to the body. Some of the more commonly understood effects are the physical aspects, including difficulties with fine and gross motor skills, spatial awareness, balance and coordination.

Day 5 of Dyspraxia Awareness Week

Dyspraxia is so much more than just physical difficulties. Just a few of the less commonly known areas it can affect are speech, thought processing and sense of direction. It can also affect us socially, a big area of difficulty for many of us.

Day 6 of Dyspraxia Awareness Week

Due to the increased amount of effort our brain has to put in to perform everyday tasks, many of us who have dyspraxia struggle with fatigue.

Day 7 of Dyspraxia Awareness Week

Despite the difficulties we experience, there are positives to being dyspraxic! Many of us have a particularly good long term memory, we are often very determined people and we think differently to others!
